  • Overview: Catalpa is currently delivering the civil and concrete package for the Bulabul 300 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), previously known as the Wellington 300 MW BESS. The project involves large-scale earthworks, drainage infrastructure, and major concrete works to support the construction of a utility-scale energy storage facility.

Scope of works

The project scope includes the execution of over 100,00 cubic metres of cut-to-fill earthworks, establishing the BESS pad, substation area, and preparing the site for stage two of the project, scheduled for construction in Q2 2026.

Catalpa is also delivering extensive drainage infrastructure, including approximately 811 linear metres of HDPE drainage pipework ranging from 375 mm to 900 mmm in diameter, 16 pre-case drainage pits, and three cast-in headwalls. Works include the construction of an RCBC creek crossing culvert, incorporating cast-in-situ headwalls and multiple large-diameter HDPE pipes to support site access and water management.

The project includes significant concrete works, with the team currently nearing 3,200 cubic metres of concrete placement for the Combi Slabs. Major concrete pours have been carefully planned and sequenced to ensure quality, efficiency and continuity across construction stages.

Delivery

Catalpa is delivering the project through a structured and coordinated construction approach, with a focus on precision earthworks, effective drainage outcomes, and high-quality concrete placement. Detailed planning of major pours and close coordination with project stakeholders has supported steady progress across all work fronts.

Outcome

To date, the project has achieved key construction milestones, including the completion of large-scale bulk earth works and ongoing delivery of drainage and concrete works. These outcomes provide a strong foundation for the continued development of the Bulabul BESS and future project stages.
